Blackwell helps pass Marriage Protection Act.

Ohio SOS J. Kenneth Blackwell threw his support behind Ohio's State Issue 1, the marriage protection act, and helped propel the issue to victory by a margin of 3,249,157 (yes) to 2,011,168 (No). In percentages 61.77% voted Yes and 38.23% voted No.

The ammendment to the State Constitution, Article XV: Section 11, now reads

"Only a union between one man and one woman may be a marriage valid in or recognized by this state and its political subdivisions. This state and its political subdivisions shall not create or recognize a legal status for relationships of unmarried individuals that intends to approximate the design, qualities, significance or effect of marriage."

Thus, Ohio refused to let the Massachusets Supreme Court to dictate by judicial fiat Ohio state law.
